YouTube censorship is much broader than the singular banning of Alex Jones—he’s really just the most famous person who got banned. It has been going on in secret for years, and the only people who have reported on it are the people who themselves are being banned.
But it’s much more than so-called “conspiracy theorists,” and conservatives who are being banned.
Now, our digital overlords at YouTube are banning channels that share and promote natural medicine. The hardest strikes have been directed at natural treatments for cancer like CBD oil, coconut oil, and content describing the dangers of vaccines that are made with heavy metal stabilizers.
The latest casualty in this modern book burning is the Natural News YouTube channel. It was banned for a supposed community guidelines violation over a 43 second long video discussing the properties of CBD oil.
According to Natural News, the video “…contained a series of imagery of cannabis plants growing in a field along with text explaining how a woman was cured of terminal cancer using its oil.” They say their video was positive in nature, compassionate, and uplifting.
As an affiliate of the Alex Jones network, Natural News had a long history of conflicts with the online video hosting site. In response to the sudden ban, YouTube replied to the creator of the channel saying that they, “… [don’t] allow content that encourages or promotes violent or dangerous acts that have an inherent risk of serious physical harm or death.”
CBD oil is one of seven natural compounds that can be extracted from the cannabis plant. It is non-psycho-active and has no harmful side effects for anyone except for those with certain allergies. It is not illegal and can be sold over the counter in almost every part of the United States.
But of course, CBD oil has also been proven in laboratory conditions to have a direct impact on live cancer cells growing in controlled conditions.
Natural News is far from the only such health channel that YouTube has struck down, but they are the most prominent. The channel was very popular. Now users are going to spend less time on YouTube because they will have to go to the Natural News website to enjoy their content.
Now, it’s fair to ask the question; what is YouTube’s motivation? According to them, it’s about protecting the viewers from harmful content. But that doesn’t explain the millions of videos and channels that feature dangerous behavior and even illegal activity. Why CBD?
With the Jones banning, part of the prevailing explanation is that the big tech-media companies don’t want to have to compete with him anymore. But the Info Wars website has more than tripled its traffic since the banning. That means there are fewer eyes on YouTube. Why didn’t YouTube learn its lesson from this?
If it’s strictly about protecting the audience from harmful content, then the platform has a heck of a lot of housekeeping to do- and they will never run out of videos to ban. It’s just an unsustainable way to do business. So, the ban is either part of a very foolish business process decision or there is something more to it.
We know that all of the big tech media firms are subsidized by the federal government. We know that the CIA is deeply involved with both Facebook and Google. We also know that the federal government is the driving force behind the opposition to anti-vaccine advocates. Could it be that the federal government has pressured YouTube to censor sites like Natural News, sites that promote a viable alternative to mainstream medical treatments for cancer?
YouTube has so many videos with content ranging from questionable to downright injurious. For example, you can find thousands of videos which are targeted at children featuring Spiderman and Disney characters doing sexual and violent things. YouTube does not take them down. There are channels showing people incurring grievous injuries doing dangerous stunts. There are even videos that show how a primitive shotgun can be made from simple tools.
All of these are still posted, and being watched by thousands of people, or more, every day. So why would YouTube go after a channel that promotes a harmless, proven effective, legal plant extract? It doesn’t make sense, and it has only deepened suspicions once thought to be the mere imaginings of the most paranoid conspiracy content.
