Excitotoxins

Excitotoxins are substances that cause chemical interactions within the brain that damage and subsequently destroy brain cells. Substances like glutamate, phenylalanine and aspartic acid (the last two found in Aspartame) have been proven to over stimulate brain cells, exciting them to the point that they die.

Many excitotoxins fall into the category of amino acids. While the brain needs amino acids to function efficiently, they can have a devastating effect on cells if too many are introduced into the brain at one time. Dr. Russell Blaylock has studied the interactions of amino acids within the brain, including those found in Aspartame. His results suggest that consuming excessive amounts, either through the use of food additives or artificial sweeteners, can lead to both dementia and Alzheimer’s, as well as other conditions that involve the nervous system.

Aspartame and other artificial sweeteners came into being because people wanted a way to make their food taste good without the unwanted calories gained from sugar and other natural sweeteners. They were developed as weight loss aids, but when the truth is told, they work in reverse.

Artificial sweeteners work by tricking the brain into thinking it has what it needs in the way of food. As the food accumulates in the stomach and offers feeling of fullness, the brain is supposed to curb food cravings and feelings of hunger. The problem occurs when the brain realizes there is not enough calories within the body for it to function efficiently. This triggers the hunger response in the brain, causing the person to be hungry much sooner than if they had eaten a meal that contained the necessary amount of calories. A study performed at Purdue University indicated that rats who were fed Aspartame gained weight twice as fast as those who ate regular foods. The same has been proven to be true for humans.

An Increased Risk of Brain Tumors

One of the three main components of Aspartame is methanol. When methanol is broken down during the digestive process, the resulting compounds include both formaldehyde and formic acid. Formaldehyde is toxic to the body and especially to the brain. Several studies were conducted that resulted in 12 out of 200 rats developed brain tumors when feed with foods that contained aspartame. Out of the 120 rats that were fed a normal diet with no artificial sweeteners, none developed brain tumors.

While it has been suggested that the reason behind the FDA fast-tracking the process of approving of Aspartame was spurred on by financial gains, the fact is that in its first three years on the market the manufacturer spent over $60 million to advertise the product. All of this despite the fact that it bypassed the majority of tests required for a food product to be released for production. In the 36 years since it has been approved, the studies concerning both brain tumors and the effects of excitoxins have left many scientists and healthcare professionals wondering how it was even considered for public use.

The link between Aspartame and the brain has been repeatedly proven through over three decades of studies. With over 59% of the American population consuming diet soda as a way to lose weight and over 74% of Americans being labeled as overweight to moderately obese, While the problem cannot be entirely attributed to the use of Aspartame and other artificial sweeteners, the link between the toxins found in the sweeteners and the reactions they cause within the brain are undeniable and have been proven to have devastating, long-term effects.
