Last week, Melania Trump returned home after nearly a week at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Her communications director said she is “resting comfortably and remains in good spirits.”
Mr. Trump released the following message on Twitter after her return: “Great to have our incredible First Lady back home in the White House. Melania is feeling and doing really well. Thank you for all of your prayers and best wishes!”
We’ve been told the normal recovery time for the procedure the First Lady underwent is just one day. The White House said the reason she stayed longer is that she is going to have a busy schedule, and doctors want to make sure she makes a full recovery.
Born in 1970, Mrs. Trump is 48 years old. But kidney surgeries are not always without complications.
The standard name for the partial or total removal of a kidney is a nephrectomy. The possible reasons for this procedure are damage to the kidney, improper or reduced function of the kidney, or cancer.
The surgery can be done in one of two ways. It can be done laparoscopically, which involves a small incision and a simple removal. The removal of a kidney can also be done in open surgery. Open surgery means a much larger area is opened up for the surgeons to see.
Laparoscopic surgery can be done when physicians know exactly what is wrong, and when what must be done is very simple. Open surgery is done when the procedure is not simple, or when doctors realize that they do not fully understand the problem.
Recovery times for Laparoscopic surgery are short, as short as one day. Open surgery can take much longer to recover from. According to Healthline.com, recovery from a nephrectomy can take several weeks in some cases. Outlooks for this type of surgery are typically good as long as the needed procedures are done within a reasonable amount of time.
Okay, Melania may be young for a First Lady, but she’s no spring chicken- and it’s not unheard of for such a surgery to take several weeks to recover from.
Except that the media won’t let it go. They are grasping at straws to make this into a bigger deal than it is. In fact, they’ve developed some pretty weird ideas about why Melania took so long to return to the White House.
The New York Times, for starters, began the speculation by supposing that she might have had an embolization. That’s a condition where blood flow to the kidneys has to be cut off for some reason. This is not an entirely unreasonable speculation since it could complicate the surgery, making it take longer to recover from.
Keep in mind that Stephanie Grisham, Mrs. Trump’s communications director, said early on that; “Mrs. Trump is at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and will likely remain there for the duration of the week. The first lady looks forward to a full recovery so she can continue her work on behalf of children everywhere.”
CNN had this to say about the surgery; “She [Melania] is the first US first lady to undergo such a serious medical procedure while in the White House since Nancy Reagan had a mastectomy in October 1987.” In fact, all of the major media outlets are repeating that line verbatim.
The CNN article then went on to describe all of the most dire surgical procedures that have been done on First Ladies since Betty Ford’s surgery in 1974.
Then, they somehow managed to turn their article on Melania’s health into a story about why they have their doubts over her taking a stance on cyberbullying.
Over on MSDNC, anchors tried to wring a salacious explanation of the surgery out of Dr. John Torres. You could see the disappointment on the anchor’s face as Torres had to assert again and again that there was nothing unusual about the procedure and that the least invasive form of the surgery was what doctors had chosen for the First Lady.
Other hand-wringing media outlets, like The Daily Mail, literally listed all the worst things that could possibly go wrong from massive internal bleeding to the remote possibility of finding Russian spy devices hidden inside Melania’s abdomen.
But what’s creepy is the way all the major outlets repeat the same line in the same way about how Melania is “the first US first lady to undergo such a serious medical procedure while in the White House since Nancy Reagan.”
It’s almost like someone is telling them all exactly what to report and how.
