Most of us know that processed food and beverages are chock full of unhealthy chemicals, made in cheap and unhealthy ways- and worst of all that the food lobbies are working overtime, spending billions to keep us in the dark about all the dangerous substances in the foods we buy. Most of us don’t have the time or money to understand all of the issues with our food. So, many people want to know, if there’s one thing you can cut out of your diet and be healthier, what is it? The answer, hands down, is high fructose corn syrup.
By now, most people understand that sugar is one of the most unhealthy things on the shelf. It’s more fattening than actual fat, more toxic than salt, and is as addictive as cocaine. Ordinary sugar is one part glucose and one part fructose. Glucose is bad for you, and fructose is toxic. High fructose corn syrup is 100% fructose and the average American eats 120 pounds of it each year.
But why is high fructose corn syrup so dangerous? First off, our bodies are much smarter than we are. Your system recognizes high fructose corn syrup as a toxic substance and tries to eliminate it immediately by processing it through the liver. Unfortunately, it’s a very difficult thing for our bodies to cope with, and it ends up in our liver- stored as fat. This leads to fatty liver, which leads to heart disease, dementia, and diabetes.
Foods that are made using high fructose corn syrup are notorious for being made using processes that are extremely unhealthy. They are heavily processed and “enriched,” which means they have been stripped of vital nutrients, rendering them impossible to digest properly and devoid of vital nutrients.
But the story gets even worse. Not only is high fructose corn syrup toxic and ubiquitous in many of the foods that line supermarket shelves, but it is also made in ways that make it especially dangerous. Heavy metals like aluminum and even mercury are commonly found bonded with high fructose corn syrup. This is largely due to cheap manufacturing processes.
Experts believe it is impossible for us to know all of the hazardous substances that find their ways into high fructose corn syrup and the products that contain it. This is because there is a wide range of machinery used to harvest, process, and distribute this stuff- and many of these are unregulated, unreported, and unmeasurable.
The good news is that the lobbyists who are pushing for greater secrecy surrounding high fructose corn syrup have not yet managed to get it off the labels on our food. Also, because it is in nearly all of the types of foods that you should not be eating- you can make a big positive difference in your diet and your health by simply cutting high fructose corn syrup out of your shopping list forever. Any food that is made with even the most modest attempt at being good for you takes the first obvious step of not containing high fructose corn syrup. That means, if you cut this nasty super-sugar out of your diet, you’ll be avoiding many other substances and processing methods that make good food into bad food.
Of course, when you realize that regulators and manufacturers of food products know full well that high fructose corn syrup is extremely bad for you, it’s natural to ask ‘why.’ Why would lobbyists, food makers, and the government work so hard to shove this stuff down our throats? What do they have to gain?
The first and most obvious answer is money. High fructose corn syrup is cheap to make- heck, the government even incentives corn farmers to sell their corn to companies that make it. High fructose corn syrup is a cheap replacement for substances that are more expensive to produce. Furthermore, as we mentioned, it’s also highly addictive. You don’t have to be a heroin dealer to understand the logic behind selling addictive substances.
Of course, when you understand issues surrounding things like fluoride, for example, it becomes clear that there are powerful people who want a weaker, sicker, dumber population. A weaker, dumbed down, and addicted population has less energy, less time, and less cognitive ability to understand what’s happening to them and they tend to believe whatever they are told.
For now, we’re still allowed to know whether or not our food contains high fructose corn syrup, but that may change in the future if the people are not vigilant in resisting it.
